Top Searched Google Trends of 2020 – In the Rearview

2020 has been quite a year – unique, unusual, unprecedented to say the least – for a variety of reasons… the most obvious one, of course – Coronavirus!

People all over the world had to face the unexpected reality of the sudden COVID-19 outbreak with 2,240,000 searches. Rumour-mills ran rampant with fake news (40,500 searches) and after-effects on all of us – social distancing (90,500), quarantine (550,000), lockdown (74,000), adding unwarranted panic and anxiety in the air.

Sadly, this year, over a million lives were lost to the pandemic, people and businesses suffered major financial problems, with many still trying to recuperate. However, there were plenty of activities, events and people that garnered immense attention this year, as per Google Search trends in India.

Obviously, the dominant keyword on Google & other search engines was ‘coronavirus’, searched over 30,400,000 times in 2020! Also, there were related key phrases like:

  • What is Coronavirus (201,000)
  • COVID symptoms (301,000)
  • What is plasma therapy? (27,100)
  • How to increase immunity? (40,500)
  • COVID-19 test centres near me (3,600 searches per month)

Many light-hearted trends kept people in good spirits, like:

  • Coffin dance (12,100)
  • Rasode mein kaun tha meme (50,070 searches in Sept’2020) – just hilarious!! Watch it here

  • Binod meme (5,400 in Aug’2020)
  • WhiteHat Jr. Chintu (110 per month)

that took the internet by storm, for quite some time this year.

Global events that were discussed on social media or searched about the most:

  • US elections (18,100)

  • Bushfires in Australia (40,500)
  • Beirut explosion (12,100)
  • Locust attack (110,000)
  • Kobe Bryant’s death (18,100) – RIP Black Mamba!

Some of the most trending global personalities this year were:

  • Kim Jong Un (823,000)
  • Rashid Khan (201,000)
  • Kamala Harris (22,200)
  • Joe Biden (33,100) (the new POTUS)

Oh, and one more surprising search that the Internet just could not get enough of – Elon Musk’s baby (358,450 in May 2020) name – X Æ A-12 (4,400), which is as unique as this year itself (now that kid’s gonna have quite a time at school… but then again, his last name is ‘Musk’).

Closer to home: IPL 2020 (with 20,400,000 monthly searches – WOAH!!) was one of the most talked about and watched events, as it was a much-needed source of entertainment and excitement for cricket-lovers (& all sports fans really), and one of the first big global events since the lockdown began.

In addition to the Sushant Singh Rajput (673,000) suicide case which dominated our screens (and our minds) for many months this year, the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (49,500) also garnered attention, and ironically, the farmers’ protest (9,900) against the newly proposed farm bill was also at the centre of a majority of conversations, both online & offline.

  • Rhea Chakraborty (leading the Bollywood search list with 2,240,000 searches this year)
  • Amitabh Bachchan (1,220,000)

  • Kangana Ranaut (823,000)
  • Arnab Goswami (550,000)
  • Neha Dhupia (246,000)
  • Ankita Lokhande (823,000)
  • Kanika Kapoor (673,000)

were among the most trending Indian personalities of this year… all for very different reasons, of course 😉

Since most people had no other option but to spend time at home in the lockdown, searches related to recipes by many amateur home chefs got popular, like:

  • how to make Paneer Tikka (5,400), Or
  • how to make Dalgona coffee (with an astounding 5.4 Million searches around the world).

If you’ve been living under a rock and haven’t tried Dalgona coffee yet, here you go!

Some people who just didn’t have the spunk – either too lazy to get into the kitchen or for lack of time due to unpredictable work from home hours, also searched for: food places near me (6,600 per month) … well, no matter what, food delivery and home-made tiffins came to the rescue of foodies everywhere.

The lockdown left people with more free time, and no access to theatres or malls. So, they opted for in-house entertainment more than ever before, by binge-watching shows:

  • Tiger King (1,600)
  • Money Heist (1,000,000)

(Image Source: What’s On Netflix )
  • Dark (450,000)
  • Big Boss 14 (246,000)
  • Mirzapur 2 (368,000)
  • Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story (880)

as well as streaming online movies:

  • Dil Bechara (1,500,000)
  • Soorarai Pottru (246,000)
  • Gunjan Saxena (260)
  • Baaghi 3 (1,220,000)

that trended this year, across OTT platforms –

  • Netflix (4,090,000)
  • Amazon Prime (5,000,000)
  • Disney Hotstar (165,000)
  • Voot (2,740,000)
  • Sony Liv (1,500,000) and many more…

And as this year draws to a close (PHEW!), with the hope of the COVID vaccine distribution on the horizon, all we can say is this :

Thank you 2020 for a year of family time, focus on health, home-cooked meals, and an opportunity to move on to the next chapter of our lives!

And an even bigger thank you to the frontline workers and volunteers,  who despite all odds, helped us make it through this year!

Here’s looking forward, expectantly, to health, happiness and better days, in 2021! #fingerscrossed #staysafe
